Abstract: The rapid advancement is linked to the development of Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Data Science with leverage basic mathematical principles. This talk will explore the dependencies of ML, AI, and Data Science on the foundational role of mathematics. We will discuss how linear algebra (basis to PCA), calculus, probability, and statistics underpin the algorithms that power predictive analytics, pattern recognition, and autonomous systems. Classic mathematical concepts fuel these technologies. Attendees will gain insights into the rigor of mathematics for refining these models. This talk elaborates the importance of a solid mathematical foundation for anyone looking to contribute to ML, AI, and Data Science ongoing revolution.

Abstract: The movement towards digitalization has been ongoing for the past two or three decades, and societies worldwide have made significant progress in this regard. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated this process, as people have increasingly relied on digital platforms for work,
education, and socializing. Even as quarantine measures are lifted, societies continue to embrace digitization at an even faster pace than before.
However, this rapid transition has also highlighted the need for individuals to develop essential skills and knowledge to navigate the digital landscape safely. While companies and institutions have traditionally been the primary targets of cyberattacks, individuals are increasingly vulnerable to security and privacy related attacks as well. Therefore, it is crucial for citizens to understand the fundamentals of cybersecurity and privacy to safeguard themselves in the digital world.
In this webinar, we explain the importance of general knowledge and abilities in the field of security and privacy in the cyberspace and we raise the most important issues that every citizen should master in this field.
Bionote:Sadegh Dorri Nogoorani is an Assistant Professor and the head of the Blockchain Laboratory at Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty of Tarbiat Modares University. He is also an active member of the Iranian Society of Cryptology. He holds an M.S. in Computer Networks, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology. His research interests are blockchain and distributed ledger technology, security, privacy, trust, and distributed systems design in general.

Abstract: Frieze patterns are decorative patterns found in nature and in man made art. All frieze can be grouped into seven types. This presentation will be interactive and the participants will get to see various frieze patterns and will be able to classify them into one of the seven types, according to their specific symmetries. In the end I will also share an algorithm for determining the symmetry group of any frieze pattern.

The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development 2022
The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development was proclaimed by the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly 2 December 2021 for 2022, stressing that the applications of basic sciences are vital for advances in medicine, industry, agriculture, water resources, energy planning, environment, communications and culture, and that basic sciences rupture technologies respond to the needs of humankind by providing access to information and increasing societal well-being, and promoting peace through improved collaboration toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and 28 other science unions and organizations constituted a Steering Committee, chaired by Michel Spiro with vice chair Jean Trần Thanh Vân, which goal from 2017 was to promote the proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly of 2022 as the International Year for Basic Science for Sustainable Development.
Over 80 other organizations, among them many national science academies and their networks, are also supporting the initiative.
UNESCO will act as the lead agency and focal point for the Year. The programme for the Year will be developed in collaboration with other relevant entities of the United Nations system, IUPAP, CERN, and their associated organizations and federations across the world.
